Horse Derby 2015 GI (3Win8): reading the 15-pair betting board, the odds and the special horses

Not a slot: Horse Derby is a six-horse animated race where you bet on which two finish first and second. How the odds board, the last-results column and the specials work.

Horse Derby 2015 GI is one of the arcade games in the 3Win8 lobby. There are no reels: six cartoon racehorses run a short animated race, and you bet on which two finish in the top two. It looks busy at first, but there is really only one kind of bet.

The betting board

The main screen is a triangle of boxes. Down the left are horses 1 to 5, across the top horses 6, 5, 4, 3 and 2, each with its own coloured number tile. Where a row and a column meet is the box for that pair. Fifteen boxes cover every pairing of six horses, and each shows the odds in green.

In the capture, some examples:

  • 1-4 at 5, 1-3 at 125, 1-2 at 80
  • 2-6 at 1000, 2-5 at 4, 2-4 at 500
  • 3-6 at 3, 4-6 at 175, 5-6 at 8

A red 0.50 under the 1-3 box shows a chip placed there. WIN (0.00) and TOTAL BETS (0.50) sit along the bottom next to the blue chip button, and a red NEW GAME button starts the race.

Last 5 Result

A column on the right lists the last five finishes with what they paid: 2-5 (4), 1-4 (5), 1-3 (4), 1-3 (4) and 2-5 (60). The same pair paid 4 one time and 60 another, so the odds are set fresh for each game rather than fixed per pair.

Beside the board are three labels, STARTER 6, SPRINTER 1 and FINISHER 2. The captured screens do not explain them; check the ? page in your app.

The race

A countdown runs, the gates open and the horses cross the screen from left to right past a white rail. At the line the result pops up in large tiles.

That race finished 2-5, with a red 4 beside the winner, the price of that pair. Stakes come off the balance as soon as you place them: it dropped from 44.49 to 43.99 when the 0.50 chip went on 1-3.

The special horses

The rules page (the hero image) lists four specials:

  • Jackpot, a white Pegasus: pays total bets x100 for the winner, with a 1,000,000 jackpot badge
  • Joker, a rainbow horse: substitutes for everything except Jackpot, Multiplier and Free Number
  • Free Number, a gold horse: adds one extra number for the winner
  • Multiplier, a jockey falling from his horse: x3, x5 or x7

Pacing

Long odds like 1000 or 500 are tempting, but they are long for a reason. One chip on a short-priced pair gives a slower, steadier session. Each race takes a few seconds, so set a number of races before you start.

Troubleshooting and questions

Does the order of the two horses matter?

The board has one box per pair (1-2, 1-3 and so on, 15 in all), so it reads as a first-and-second bet in either order. The result is shown as a pair such as 2-5.

Why do the odds look so uneven?

They change from game to game. In the capture, 1-3 was at 125 and 2-6 at 1000, while 2-5 was only 4. The last-results column shows 2-5 paying 4 in one game and 60 in another.
