Wong Po (旺宝) on SKY777: a first session on the red-and-bamboo 25-line slot

Wong Po (旺宝, "prosperous treasure") is a Chinese-luck slot in the SKY777 lobby. Red reel panels, gold trim and a bamboo forest behind make it look busy, but the rules are short once you open them.

Step 1: read the screen

The reels are 5 x 3 on bright red tiles. A round 25 LINES badge sits on the left edge, and the spin button on the right says HOLD FOR AUTOPLAY. At the bottom: LINE 25, BET 1, TOTAL BET 0.25, WIN, DENOMINATION 0.01 and BALANCE.

The card letters are drawn in a brush style so they look like Chinese characters at first glance: A in red, K in orange, Q in pink and J in blue.

Step 2: check the paytable

The themed symbols pay for two, three, four and five:

• Bagua mirror: 500 / 150 / 30 / 5
• Potted lucky bamboo: 400 / 100 / 20 / 5
• Gold gourd: 300 / 75 / 15 / 5

The letters need three: A pays 250 / 50 / 10, K 200 / 25 / 10, Q 150 / 20 / 5 and J 100 / 20 / 5.

The WILD is a jade guardian figure and it is the best symbol on the table: 10000 for five, 1000 for four, 100 for three and 10 for two. It substitutes for everything except the Scatter.

Step 3: know what the scatter does

The SCATTER is a golden bonsai tree. It pays by count anywhere on screen (5, 10 or 50 for three, four or five), and it also opens the free game.

The trigger is specific: a Scatter on reel 1 and another on reel 5 give 8 free spins. More spins can be won while the free game is running.

Step 4: set the bet

Tap the arrow on the left. The chips let you change DENOMINATION, LINE and BET, and switch TURBO on for quicker spins. Leave LINE at 25 so the wild can connect on every line. The balance in these screens was 25.76, which is about a hundred spins at 0.25.

Step 5: pace it

Most of the action comes from the four themed symbols and the free game trigger. Two wilds at the start of a line already pay 10, the only symbol besides the themed four that pays for a pair. Play the first 30 or 40 spins at the lowest setting before deciding whether to raise BET.
